More Than a Game: Dad’s Corner Offers Powerful, Simple Connection
St. Catharines, ON – What started as a desire to give back has grown into a meaningful community for fathers across Niagara.
Allen Sadikov, a Niagara Children’s Centre parent and volunteer, has been connected to the organization for years. His son accessed services at the Centre, and like many parents, he quickly discovered the value of being part of a place that puts children and families first.
“The services were invaluable for our child,” he says. “But just as important was the sense of community it gave us as parents. Through things like Parent Talk and coffee chats, we met other families we never would have crossed paths with otherwise.”
Those connections became lasting ones. Some of Sadikov’s closest friendships were formed through the Children’s Centre — relationships he says his family truly cherishes.
As he became more involved through the Family Advisory Network, he and other male caregivers noticed a gap. While many programs brought parents together, there were few spaces designed specifically for dads and male-identifying caregivers to connect. From those conversations, Dad’s Corner was born.
“I wanted to be there for other dads just like myself,” Sadikov explains. “We worked with the Children’s Centre to create a space where dads could get together, learn from each other, and feel understood. It’s an open environment with people who know what you’re going through.”
What sets Dad’s Corner apart is its intentionally relaxed approach. There’s no pressure to talk, no structured agenda, and no expectation beyond showing up.
“We connect best in casual settings,” he remarked. “Watching a game, playing golf, or grabbing a coffee gives you time to slowly open up. Once you get comfortable with each other, those bonds form naturally.”
At Dad’s Corner, conversation happens organically — if and when participants are ready. For Sadikov, that’s exactly the point.
“I hope dads see it as a break,” he says. “A chance to unwind, relax, and enjoy each other’s company. Over time, those relationships turn into real support systems where we help each other when we need it most.”
At last night’s event, Sadikov hosted a watch party at a local restaurant as the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Buffalo Sabres. For father figures considering attending in the future, Sadikov offers simple reassurance.
“It’s a fun way to meet other dads in similar situations,” he says. “Some will have kids older than yours, some younger, and there’s so much you can learn from each other. There’s a lot of laughter, a lot of understanding, and it’s been incredibly worthwhile to be part of.”
