Otter mascot with blue top and blue hat in front of blue sky

Meet Sunny the River Otter

Niagara Children’s Centre’s new mascot

Sunny is a playful, curious, and energetic North American River Otter — a symbol of resilience, teamwork, and belonging. Just like the children we support, Sunny knows that every challenge can be met with determination, creativity, and a little bit of fun! From splashing down riverbanks to finding new ways to navigate obstacles, Sunny reminds us that every moment of the journey is worth celebrating — especially when we do it together.

With sleek brown fur, a glistening tail, and a bright blue top inspired by Niagara Children’s Centre, Sunny shows every child and family that you’re never alone.

Together, We Flow Forward!

Sunny the Otter reminds us all — children, families, staff, and community — that when we move together with curiosity, resilience, and care, every challenge becomes an adventure worth sharing. Together, we flow forward!

About North American River Otters

What do they look like?

  • Measure up to 1.4 metres long from nose to tail
  • Weigh up to 14 kilograms
  • Sleek brown fur, long, strong tail, and tiny ears that close underwater
  • Webbed feet are ideal for swimming
  • Sensitive whiskers to find fish, clams, and other aquatic prey

Where do they live?

Otters can be found in many habitats — from lakes and large creeks to slow-flowing rivers. They can even be spotted sliding down snowy hills or playing in the mud.

What do they eat?

Otters are omnivores — they eat fish, crayfish, amphibians, birds’ eggs, and aquatic plants. They’re crafty hunters that can plug their nose and ears when diving for a meal.

Wild fact:

When frightened, an otter can emit a piercing scream heard up to 2 km away!

A Symbol of Our Community

Sunny’s design is more than just playful — it reflects the heart of Niagara Children’s Centre:
  • 12 Whiskers for 12 Municipalities: From Fort Erie to Grimsby, every whisker reminds us that we are one strong and connected community.
  • Many Ways to Move: Just like how otters swim, walk, gallop, slide, and float, every child moves in their own unique way — and every journey is worth supporting.
  • A Hidden Pocket for What Matters Most: Did you know otters have a special pocket for a cherished rock? This reminds us to hold tight to the things that matter, whether a toy, a hug, or a routine that brings comfort.

Honouring Our Indigenous Connections

Sunny the Otter also celebrates the land and water we call home — a land shared by the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, Attiwonderonk, and Mississauga peoples. In many Indigenous traditions, otters represent:
  • Joy and Playfulness — living fully in the moment
  • Strong Family Bonds — reminding us how important connections are
  • Cleverness and Resilience — adapting to life’s challenges
  • Harmony Between People and Nature — teaching respect for the land and water

Otters are seen as protectors and helpers, reminding us of the sacredness of water and the balance of the natural world. By choosing Sunny as our mascot, we honour these teachings and the Indigenous Peoples who have lived, worked, and shared their knowledge in Niagara since time began.

Our Values, Reflected in Sunny

Children and Families Come First
Sunny swims alongside others, reminding them that therapists, friends, and loved ones are there every step of the way.

Excellence and Innovation
Otters are inventive and resourceful — and Sunny inspires children to try new approaches, embrace challenges, and celebrate every victory, big or small.

Teamwork and Partnerships
Sunny knows the importance of sticking together. Whether sliding down riverbanks or navigating tricky waters, success is sweeter when shared.

Respect Underlies All We Do
Each otter finds its own path, and so do the children and families we support. Sunny reminds us to respect every journey and celebrate every unique success.
