The Niagara Children’s Centre provides caring and professional family-centred services in the Niagara region helping families with their child’s development. Whether it is communicative, developmental, physical and/or behavioural goals, we’ve got it covered. We are committed to our mission of seeing ‘Niagara’s children and youth at their best’.

We are offering a day camp to children and youth with significant physical and communicative needs to participate fully in a summer day camp. The summer camp will operate from August 11-15 and 18-22, 2025 and we are looking for an Educational Assistant (1) and Camp Counsellor (4) to support the inclusive and engaging experience of youth attending the Niagara Children’s Centre camp. Both positions report to the Clinical Manager.

The Educational Assistant is responsible for providing personal care, promoting safety and inclusion and assisting campers with daily routines and activities to ensure a safe, enjoyable and meaningful camp experience. They assist with mobility needs including transfers, positioning and use of mobility equipment. They support communication needs using augmentative or alternative communication systems. They provide feeding support, including use of adaptive equipment or specialized feeding techniques, if required. They help manage behaviour, administer medications, support dressing and changing, and provide toileting and continence care as needed. They will provide program and environment support, work closely with other camp staff and contribute to a fun, respectful and engaging atmosphere.

The Camp Counsellor will plan and lead recreational activities, ensure camper safety and provide hands-on support to campers with significant physical and communicative needs. They foster participation, fun and friendship while working collaboratively with the camp team. They will plan, lead and supervise daily camp activities, encourage camper participation, and provide individualized support based on each camper’s physical, communicative and emotional needs. They will provide program support and safety, respectful communication, and demonstrate flexibility and willingness to support all areas of the camp program.

Health and Safety

All employees of the Niagara Children’s Centre will comply with the duties assigned to Workers as per Section 28 of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Accountability and Freedom to Act:

The incumbent has latitude for discretion within practices and procedures covered by precedents, Centre policy and procedure manuals and supervisory review.

Key Relationships:

The Camp Counsellor and the Educational Assistant are concerned with the effectiveness of all relationships that affect the Centre. The following are particularly significant to the position:

External

  • Parents and caregivers of campers

Internal

  • Clinical managers and staff
  • Volunteers and other camp staff

Qualifications:

Education:

The successful candidates must have a high school diploma. Post secondary studies in recreation, child and youth care, education, nursing, OTA/PTA or a related field are an asset.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Previous experience working with children in a therapeutic, recreational, or healthcare setting is an asset.
  • Knowledge of accessibility and inclusion practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and families
  • Ability to adapt activities based on each child’s abilities and preferences
  • Creative and resourceful approach to engaging children in fun and meaningful activities.
  • Ability to lift and transfer children and youth with care and safety

Other:

  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred)
  • Criminal reference check (vulnerable sector)
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training (preferred)
  • Reliable transportation to and from the camp site – Niagara Children’s Centre
  • Bilingualism is an asset
  • Successful candidates will be required to participate in transfer and lift training and other training specific to camp participant’s needs.
