We value the diverse identities, experiences, perspectives, and abilities of the children, youth, families, staff, board members, and community partners who make up our community.
The calendar provides opportunities for learning, reflection, recognition and celebration, while helping us better understand and appreciate the diverse experiences, identities and perspectives within our community. It is curated by our EDIA Committee as a resource to support meaningful engagement throughout the year.

Emancipation Day
Emancipation Day celebrations began on 1 August 1834, when people of African descent in Upper and Lower Canada marked the end of more than 250 years of enslavement throughout the British Empire. Nineteenth-century events celebrating Emancipation Day took place in what are now Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and British Columbia, inspiring an annual tradition that continues to this day throughout Canada.
Locally, Matter of Black has proudly presented #EmancipationDaySTC since 2020. The organization aims to celebrate old traditions and foster greater solidarity and pride among members of the Black Canadian community in memory of its remarkable achievements and face of persistent racism.
